From Idea to MVP in 3 Months: How the BYOB Method Works
A phase-by-phase look at how PerpeX students take a raw idea to a registered, revenue-generating business in three months through the Build Your Own Business challenge.

Most business courses end with an exam. The BYOB (Build Your Own Business) challenge ends with a live pitch, and ideally, paying customers.
Here's how three months of structured execution take a student from "I have an idea" to "I have a business."
Phase 1: Inception (find the problem worth solving)
Every good business starts with a customer problem, not a product. In the first phase, students learn startup science and business basics, then get out of the classroom to observe.
- Vision Mapping Workshop: what do you want to build, and why you?
- Customer Persona Workshop: who exactly has this problem, and how painful is it?
The output isn't a business plan. It's a clear problem statement and a map of market gaps.
Phase 2: Revelation (validate before you build)
This is where most first-time founders save months of wasted effort. Students run user interviews, test assumptions and learn lean-startup thinking.
The key question in this phase is simple: would anyone pay for this? If the answer is no, you pivot, and that's a win, not a failure.
BYOB activities here include building a Marketing Strategy Blueprint and a first Sales Funnel.
Phase 3: Transition (make it real)
Ideas are free. Businesses are registered. In Transition, students:
- Complete business registration and incorporation
- Understand GST, tax basics and compliance
- Build a budget and a risk plan
- Practise negotiation, because every supplier, partner and customer conversation is one
This is also where teams form and the first revenue arrives.
Phase 4: Implementation (build, sell, launch)
Now the product gets built and the pitch gets sharp. Students onboard users, run operations and launch digital marketing campaigns. Every week includes pitch practice and investor simulations, with blunt feedback.
It ends with Showcase Day, a public demo where every team presents what they've built.
Phase 5: Revolution (grow or go further)
The final phase is about what comes next. For some teams that means seed funding and scaling: learning fundraising, growth hacking and strategy, and competing for the CapeX startup fund. For others it means stepping into a job role with the confidence of someone who has actually run a business.
Why it works
- No theory exams. You're evaluated on tasks, projects and real results through the Career Credit Score.
- Mentors who've done it. More than 100 CEOs validated the curriculum, and founders teach every week.
- Deadlines that matter. A live Demo Day is a powerful motivator.
Don't just study startups. Run one.
