MBA vs a Practical Entrepreneurship Program: Which Is Right for You?

"Should I do an MBA?" is one of the most common questions we hear from graduates in Kerala. For some people the answer is clearly yes. For many others, especially those who want to start something, a shorter, practical program is the better first step.

Start with the outcome, not the degree

Ask yourself what you want to be doing in two years:

• A structured corporate career (consulting, banking, large-company management tracks): a good MBA opens those doors, and its alumni network and campus placements are hard to replicate.
• Running your own business, or joining a startup in an early, hands-on role: what matters most is proof that you can find customers, sell, operate and adapt.
• Getting job-ready fast in a specific function (HR, sales, operations): a focused, practical course with real tools and a portfolio is often the quicker route.

• You can't afford, or don't want, to stop earning for two years.

When an MBA is the better call

• You're aiming at roles where the MBA is effectively a requirement.
• You want a large, established alumni network and on-campus recruitment.
• You're switching industries and need a structured reset.

The best of both

These paths aren't mutually exclusive. Many founders build first and study later, and an MBA application that says "I started and ran a business" is far stronger than one that doesn't.
