Validate Your Startup Idea in 7 Days with Customer Interviews
A practical, week-long plan to test whether your startup idea solves a real problem, including who to talk to, what to ask and the questions that lead you astray.

The most expensive mistake a first-time founder can make is building something nobody wants. The cheapest insurance is talking to customers before you build. Here's a seven-day plan we use in the Revelation phase of the BYOB challenge.
Day 1: Write down your assumptions
Before you speak to anyone, list what must be true for your idea to work:
- Who has the problem?
- How often do they face it?
- What do they do about it today?
- Would they pay for something better?
Each of these is a hypothesis, not a fact.
Day 2: Define your customer persona
Be specific. "Students" is too broad. "Final-year commerce students in Kozhikode preparing for their first job" is something you can actually go and find.
Day 3: Find 10–15 people to talk to
Start with your extended network, then go where your customers already are: colleges, markets, WhatsApp groups, LinkedIn. Ask for 15 minutes to learn about their experience, not to pitch your idea.
Days 4–5: Run the interviews
Good questions are about the past, not hypothetical futures:
- "Tell me about the last time you faced this problem."
- "What did you do about it?"
- "What was frustrating about that?"
- "Have you paid for anything to solve it?"
Avoid questions that invite polite lies:
"Would you use an app that does X?""Do you think this is a good idea?"
People are kind. They'll say yes to be nice. Behaviour is the only honest signal.
Day 6: Look for patterns
Lay your notes side by side. Are the same pains coming up repeatedly? Are people already spending money or time on workarounds? Strong signals look like:
- The problem comes up without you prompting it
- People describe it with emotion
- They've already tried to solve it
Day 7: Decide: persevere, pivot or pause
If the pattern is strong, move forward and design a small test, like a landing page, a pre-order or a manual version of the service. If it's weak, adjust your customer or problem and run another round. Either way, you've learned something in a week that could have cost you a year.
Start messy. Learn fast. Repeat until great.
Customer Persona and Vision Mapping workshops are the first things PerpeX students do in the BYOB program. If you'd rather learn this with mentors beside you, book a free counselling call.
