Malabar Was the World's Marketplace. Here's Why It Can Lead Again.
For centuries, Calicut traded with the world. We explain why Kozhikode and Malabar are ready to become India's next startup hub, and what young founders need to get there.

Long before "global supply chain" was a phrase, ships from Arabia, China and Europe were anchoring off the Malabar coast. Calicut was where pepper, cardamom, textiles and ideas changed hands. Traders here negotiated across languages, managed risk across oceans and built relationships that lasted generations.
That is entrepreneurship in its purest form, and it is in this region's DNA.
So what happened?
Somewhere along the way, the ambition was redirected. The safest path became the default: study, clear the exam, find a job, often in the Gulf. It's a path that has built families and communities, and there's no shame in it. But it quietly taught a generation that building was something other people did.
The result is familiar to anyone who has sat in a Kerala college classroom: thousands of graduates every year with degrees, but no direction. Plenty of talent, very little proof of work.
Why now is different
Three things have changed in the last few years:
- Distribution is cheap. A founder in Kozhikode can reach customers across India, or the world, through Instagram, WhatsApp and marketplaces, with almost no upfront cost.
- Infrastructure has arrived. UPI, GST registration online and cloud tools mean you can set up, bill and scale a business from a laptop.
- The diaspora is an asset. Malabar's global network of professionals and business owners is a ready-made source of mentors, customers and capital.
What's missing isn't opportunity. It's a place where young people learn to act on it.
What a new generation of founders needs
When we spent two years working directly with businesses before launching PerpeX, the same gaps showed up again and again. Graduates understood theory but couldn't:
- Talk to a customer and find the real problem
- Sell a product and handle a "no"
- Register a company, file GST or build a simple budget
- Pitch an idea in a way an investor takes seriously
None of these are learned from a textbook. They're learned by doing, badly at first and then better.
Entrepreneurship isn't a subject. It's a survival skill.
Building Malabar's greatest doers
That's the idea behind the BYOB (Build Your Own Business) program, the flagship of PerpeX B-School. Students don't write case studies about other people's startups. They run their own, from idea to first revenue, in three months, mentored by more than 100 CEOs, founders and CXOs.
Some will go on to raise funding. Others will walk into jobs with a proof-of-work portfolio that no resume can match. Either way, they leave as builders.
Malabar was once the heart of global trade. We believe it can be again, one business at a time.
